Chikungunya is a viral fever which infects humans who are bit by a particular type of mosquito – Aedes Aegypti. It was first discovered in 1952 in Tanzania, Africa. The virus has since infected people from many countries across the world including India, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, China, Egypt and other countries mainly in South Asia and South East Asia. The virus has also recently started to spread in Europe and the American continent.
The name Chikungunya was derived from the Swahili language, which means “to become contorted”. The disease itself is usually not life threatening, but causes immense pain to the victim and the after effects of the Chikungunya fever are annoying to say the least. Usually, the symptoms of Chikungunya are no different than Dengue, another popular fever caused by mosquitoes, and hence, in many instances, the Chikungunya fever is misdiagnosed as dengue.
